DAT Archive

I just figured out a way to digitise my DAT (Digital Audio Tape) recordings and so now I’m going through them to copy them on to my computer.

One of the ones that I just made a copy was a big influence on me. I used to listen to Kiss 100 FM (the one based in London) and when I got my DAT recorder I saved a few shows. Two of them are on a tape that I listened to over and over. The first is a mix by T. Harris and it is mostly deep house and the second show was with Andy Weatherall who was a legend to me and my friends. These two shows along with the mixes my pal Chris Giorgi did around the same time were among my biggest musical influences as well as the band Talking Heads.

You can listen to the file of the DAT (in a compressed format) below. It also has some of my own tracks on there, some of which I have released and some which I haven’t mostly because they were flawed in some way, i.e. glitchy or had dropouts or just weren’t that good in my opinion.

Let me know what you think.

By the way the name “IC_DAT” comes from the labels I put on them which stood for “Information Collective Digital Audio Tape”. Being able to record that much digital data was a game changer for me and I believed was only the beginning of a new movement I was going to call the “Information Collective”. My tapes were the start of both a collection and a new way of life. Maybe more on that later. Just remember that these recordings were before the Internet really took off.

I also added another file to my website. It is a mix that I did which I separated out from the full tape recording. I did this mix around the same time I was a DJ at a club in Leeds, travelling down from Edinburgh. I’m pretty sure I posted it to my Mixcloud account but this version is straight from the DAT. I will be adding a section of mixes to my website in due course but for now the link is: https://music.drewmcnaughton.net/Jru/DnB_Mix.mp3
