Prompted by a recent re-connection with a pal from Edinburgh Uni I did a bit of rummaging in the recordings of my Digital Audio Tape archive. One of them had the label “Dubs” on it meaning dub plates, or acetates. These are one-off records cut by a lathe onto acetate and they were commonly made for DJ’s in the 90’s Drum and Bass scene. I used to go to a place called Music House in London and get some made of my own music and it was while I was there on my first visit that I met Mowgli who invited me to come and DJ at his night in Leeds called D.O.P.E.
Before I venture too much farther down Memory Lane will get back to the point of this post. I made some edits of the DAT recording to share the tracks I had on my “Dubs” tape. This included a fellow musician who was released on Mowgli’s DubShack label called Damian who went under the name of Controlla 7. Also I had tracks from two friends from Ediinburgh who I lent my DAT recorder to. Ruchir is the friend I recently got back in touch with and Seiji was another Drum and Bass producer who released his tracks on a number of labels including Reinforced Records. I also recorded one of my own tracks off the acetate I had of it because I misplaced the original DAT recordings I cut it from.
Here are the tracks below in order that they appear on the tape. At the end of the tape was the Grooverider radio show I have previously shared as a mix.
